AMC CEO once again criticized Robinhood, questioning the shareholder rights of stock tokens and the 1:1 support mechanism

2026-09-13 12:05:14

AMC CEO Adam Aron once again criticized Robinhood's stock token business in a post, raising several questions to Robinhood CEO Vlad Tenev and Chief Legal Officer Dan Gallagher. Aron stated that stock tokens violate the fundamental concept of stock ownership and questioned why Robinhood continues to heavily promote stock tokens on its U.S. site when it cannot provide relevant products to U.S. users.

Aron also questioned whether stock tokens might lead buyers to mistakenly believe they have the same rights as actual shareholders, as well as the 1:1 stock support mechanism: if some of the underlying real stocks used to support the stock tokens are simultaneously lent to short sellers, can the related tokens still be considered truly 1:1 supported? Aron further criticized Robinhood for conducting related business through a Jersey entity, stating that while stock tokens may represent innovation in Robinhood's view, in his view, "it will only bring shame to Robinhood."

Yesterday, Robinhood co-founder Vlad Tenev published a lengthy article outlining Robinhood's vision of enabling global investors (especially non-U.S. users) to gain exposure to U.S. stocks and ETFs through blockchain, and he focused on the question of whether issuers need to agree to the tokenization of stocks.
