The U.S. Department of Justice has established a Superintelligence Special Task Force to combat AI abuse

2026-11-06 04:51:14

The U.S. Department of Justice announced the establishment of the "Superintelligence" Special Task Force (DOJ-SITF), led by Deputy Attorney General Stanley Woodward and Deputy Deputy Attorney General Stephen Weiss, specifically to oversee the misuse of advanced artificial intelligence. The task force's established mission is to ensure that the United States' leading position in the "superintelligence" field is not undermined by criminals, targeting foreign governments and their agents, transnational crime organizations, as well as businesses and individuals using AI to commit fraud and other crimes.

Attorney General Todd Blanche stated that the development of "superintelligence" will continue to be driven by American innovators, and the task force will collaborate with SI Force Chairman Jay Clayton to prevent critical AI technologies from being manipulated by domestic and foreign criminals. He noted that the Department of Justice will continue to identify and prosecute individuals who violate the law using superintelligence, including malicious actions targeting American taxpayers, U.S. critical infrastructure, or other national security areas.

Weiss stated that the Department of Justice also has the responsibility to enhance regular reporting on superintelligence risks and responses, and to ensure that businesses implement strict internal controls to ensure that relevant technologies "operate as intended." This task force is one of the federal-level initiatives to advance AI regulation; the SEC has included "superintelligence" in its review priorities for 2027, and U.S. banking regulator OCC also released its first AI framework this week. The Department of Justice did not specify the timeline for the task force or disclose how it will coordinate with other agencies.
