first_img Claude of Anthropic cracked the 25-year puzzle of NSA's elliptic curve

Anthropic's AI model Claude cracked a 25-year-old puzzle in the field of cryptography in less than 30 minutes, tracing a set of numbers provided by the National Security Agency (NSA) to the U.S. government in the late 1990s back to a common random number generator that used timestamps from 1997 and 1998. These numbers have long been suspected of hiding a backdoor. In 2000, the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) adopted a set of elliptic curves provided by the NSA, but the NSA never explained where the partial numbers (seeds) used to generate these curves came from. After Edward Snowden disclosed that the NSA had attempted to undermine cryptographic standards, suspicions about its hidden backdoors intensified. Cryptographers Neal Koblitz and Alfred Menezes discussed this controversy in a 2015 paper, and security researcher Steve Weis spent years searching for answers. In 2023, Filippo Valsorda and others even set up a bounty for this.Claude traced the five NIST curve seeds back to the random number generator lrand48 in an old C software library and reproduced the widely used P-256 curve sequence, finding an exact match with the published seeds among the 1842 candidates. Anthropic stated that this significantly reduces the possibility of hidden weaknesses, and users of NIST curves do not need to make any changes. Bitcoin is unaffected, as its wallets use the simpler secp256k1 curve, which has almost no room for secretly implanted weaknesses. The bounty of $36,864 will be donated to the nonprofit organization Internet Security Research Group behind Let's Encrypt.

hot_img A trader in Hong Kong embezzled HKD 50 million in margin for leveraged stock trading and was arrested after reporting a loss of HKD 150 million

According to Tencent News "Frontline," a 26-year-old male employee of Hong Kong Central Wealth Management Services Limited misappropriated 50 million Hong Kong dollars as margin without authorization, using it to finance the purchase of a double long position in the Southern Eastern Ying Hynix ETF (07709.HK), resulting in a paper loss of up to 150 million Hong Kong dollars. The trader was arrested by the police on July 20 on suspicion of "theft," with the incident occurring from January 9 to July 20.Financial analysts in Hong Kong stated that the reason the 50 million principal turned into a 150 million loss was due to the combination of margin financing and the double leverage of the long ETF. This ETF surged to a historical high of 193.65 Hong Kong dollars at the end of June, driven by the storage chip concept, but then the semiconductor sector sharply corrected, falling to 52.58 Hong Kong dollars by July 20, a decline of over 72%. The police revealed that the relevant positions had not yet been forcibly liquidated, and the final loss would still fluctuate with the stock price. The incident was discovered during a recent audit of the company, which reported it to the police. Central Wealth Management is not a licensed company by the Securities and Futures Commission, and Central Wealth Securities stated that the involved personnel are not their employees and are unrelated to the incident, but after the event, some clients exhibited risk-averse withdrawals.

Bitget releases a short film for Bitcoin Pizza Day, using dark humor to flip the narrative of "crypto is dead."

On the occasion of Bitcoin Pizza Day in 2026, Bitget launched a global branding campaign titled "Flip the Slice," centered around a music short film called "The Infinite Flip." The short film humorously transforms the voices of skeptics into a part of community culture expression, continuing the spirit and narrative tension of Bitcoin Pizza Day.The film portrays the development of the crypto industry through various cartoon characters. Each time the outside world shouts "crypto is dead," the characters reappear with a "resurrection dance," symbolizing the crypto industry's rebirth from doubt and lows. Through this dark humor and the repeatedly "flipping" narrative style, the short film aims to convey the spirit of "crypto is not dead, it flips and is reborn" to the crypto community.Bitget's Chief Marketing Officer Ignacio Aguirre Franco stated that Bitcoin has been declared "dead" hundreds of times, but in this short film, the critics' arguments become plot points rather than conclusions. By flipping these narratives with humor and fun, each "death" serves as a prologue to the resurgence of the crypto world. As part of the overall Pizza Festival activities, Bitget's "Pizza Box Resume Project" will print selected Web3 youth resumes on pizza boxes and deliver them to industry partners in various regions, transforming classic crypto culture memes into career pathways for young people. This initiative also continues the core direction of Blockchain4Youth, which is to help young people establish a connection path from knowledge acquisition and skill demonstration to integration into the industry ecosystem.
