Hackers claim to have leaked information of over 40,000 employees from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security through Okta, and DDoSecrets has made it public

According to TechCrunch, a hacker claiming to be from the "Department of Peace" has reportedly obtained a large amount of employee data from the Okta single sign-on system used by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), which was publicly released on Wednesday by the data transparency organization Distributed Denial of Secrets (DDoSecrets) as the "Icepick" dataset. The leaked records exceed 40,000, accounting for about one-fifth of DHS's approximately 220,000 employees, involving names, positions, work emails, phone numbers, and office locations, along with information related to internal system permissions. Among these, approximately 21,000 records belong to Customs and Border Protection (CBP) personnel, while about 10,000 records involve the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and its Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), with nearly 1,000 related to the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA).TechCrunch stated that it has verified the authenticity of some of the data, with timestamps indicating that the data was exported around mid-August. The hacker also provided the data to journalist and hacker maia arson crimew, who then forwarded it to DDoSecrets. Okta responded that its systems and data were not breached; a spokesperson for the Department of Homeland Security has not yet responded to requests for comment. The report indicates that this is the third incident of data leakage from the U.S. government that has drawn attention in the past month, following the theft of Federal Bureau of Investigation personnel files and Pentagon personnel data.

first_img The U.S. Department of Homeland Security requires civil agencies to remove DeepSeek and prohibits new purchases

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) instructed U.S. civil agencies on Monday to remove products from the Chinese AI company DeepSeek from government IT systems, as well as any third-party services built on that model, and to prohibit new procurements. The notice stated that using DeepSeek could lead to the transfer of sensitive data to China and could generate intelligence targeting U.S. individuals and institutions. DHS indicated that these models constitute "multiple threat vectors."The ban targets not only DeepSeek's own applications but also covers third-party services based on its development. A DHS memorandum from July was made public on Monday, which had previously requested agencies to monitor the risks related to DeepSeek in the traffic in and out of government websites. The U.S. Department of Commerce, the Navy, and the states of New York, Tennessee, and Virginia had previously restricted DeepSeek. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) will vote on October 29 to decide whether to ban all Chinese laboratories from testing electronic products used in the U.S.DeepSeek is a startup based in Hangzhou, and its open-source model attracted widespread attention on January 27, 2025, with development costs of less than $5 million, leading to a 16% drop in Nvidia's stock price that day, evaporating about $600 billion in market value. In April 2025, the U.S. House of Representatives' Special Committee on China Issues stated that DeepSeek might secretly send U.S. user data to the Chinese government and may have used about 60,000 Nvidia chips, of which 20,000 were subject to U.S. export controls. The V4-Pro model preview released by DeepSeek in April this year was priced about 98% lower than OpenAI's GPT-5.5 Pro and was made available for free download and modification under the MIT license; this week it also released an updated version of the V4.1-Flash model focused on efficiency optimization.

first_img Animoca's NUVA launched the HOME token, opening the U.S. home equity credit market to non-U.S. investors

Animoca Brands and Nuva Labs have launched the real-world asset market NUVA with the HOME token, providing qualified non-U.S. investors exposure to U.S. home equity lines of credit (HELOC) with a minimum participation of 1 USDC. This ERC-20 token aims for an annualized yield of 7%, resetting monthly, with interest income and loan performance reflected in the net asset value of the fund pool, which in turn determines the token price. The product has no lock-up period and features a first-loss tranche that accounts for approximately 5% of the fund pool's value, designed to absorb losses from defaults or forced sales before they affect HOME holders. The underlying assets of HOME are the HELOC pools initiated by Figure Technology Solutions. According to Federal Reserve economic data, the size of U.S. HELOCs rose to $460 billion in the second quarter. Nuva Labs CEO Anthony Moro stated that traditional securitization primarily targets institutional investors, making it difficult for individual investors to access such structures. HOME does not attempt to create residential credit demand from scratch but presents an asset class with existing institutional demand in a more accessible on-chain structure. HOME holders do not directly own the underlying loans but hold tokens corresponding to the exposure of the fund pool.HOME is only available to qualified non-U.S. users, with the UK, Hong Kong, China, the British Virgin Islands, and sanctioned jurisdictions also excluded. NUVA will enforce these restrictions through wallet screening and IP address blocking.
