first_img The case of four people murdered in Mexico involves a Bitcoin robbery, and two suspects are facing trial

According to Cointelegraph, the Attorney General's Office of the State of Mexico (FGJEM) reported that two suspects, Diego Sebastián and Gerardo, were arrested for allegedly murdering Jonathan Meléndez, the keyboardist of the rock band Camilo Séptimo, along with his pregnant wife, daughter, and an employee. The family's golden retriever was also killed. The suspects are accused of committing the crime to obtain a cold wallet that allegedly contained millions of dollars in Bitcoin, with one of the suspects being a business partner of the victim, using that relationship to gain access to the victim's home. The two will appear in court on Wednesday, where the judge will decide if there is enough evidence to continue the criminal proceedings. If convicted, each suspect could face a prison sentence of 25 to 70 years corresponding to each victim.Such violent robberies targeting cryptocurrency holders (known as "ransom attacks") are on the rise. According to CertiK data, there were 52 reported ransom attack incidents globally in the first half of 2026, a year-on-year increase of 33.3%; among them, there were 20 home invasions targeting cryptocurrency holders, compared to only 1 during the same period last year.Chainalysis estimates that in the first half of 2026, criminals stole over 30 million dollars in cryptocurrency through ransom attacks. In 2025, global ransom attack incidents increased by 75% to 72 cases, with France leading with 19 cases, accounting for about 40% of the total attacks in Europe.

first_img Samsung Taylor Semiconductor Fabrication Plant will begin trial operations at the end of this month, with 2-nanometer orders already filled

According to South Korea's "Cultural Daily," Samsung Electronics' wafer fab in Taylor, Texas, is expected to enter trial operation around the end of this month, as orders for 2-nanometer chips from Tesla, Broadcom, Arm, and others continue to pour in, with pre-production capacity nearing full load. The plant has accumulated an investment of $37 billion since 2022, with plans to begin trial operation early next month and mass production next year, with an initial monthly capacity of about 50,000 wafers, close to TSMC's approximately 80,000 wafers. The report states that the Taylor plant will produce Tesla's next-generation artificial intelligence chip AI5, Broadcom's new generation communication chips, and Arm's smart device AI chips, among others. Samsung's 2-nanometer yield has increased from about 60% earlier this year to around 80% recently. The company sent personnel for process, equipment, and yield to the plant in June, and began installing equipment in July. At a recent earnings meeting, Samsung projected that this year's 2-nanometer order volume would more than double compared to last year, and stated that NVIDIA's inference chip Grok3 began mass production last month; Samsung also recently raised the foundry price for 4-nanometer chips by up to 15%.The second Taylor plant is scheduled to start construction by the end of this year and begin mass production in 2030. Samsung has requested major partners to complete the relevant production equipment safety certifications in advance, and some partners are considering sending dozens of personnel to the local area. At the same time, Intel issued about $20 billion in new shares last month and expanded investments in 2-nanometer level 18A and 1.4-nanometer level 14A, while Japan's Rapidus completed its 2-nanometer factory in Hokkaido last month and entered the wafer trial production stage.

Shanghai issues a new industrialization plan, exploring innovative frameworks such as quantum artificial intelligence

Shanghai issued the "14th Five-Year Plan for Accelerating the Advancement of New Industrialization and Building a Modern Industrial System." The plan proposes to comprehensively enhance intelligent computing capabilities, tackle high-performance, low-power, and high-efficiency intelligent computing chips, improve cluster networking and cloud service capabilities, and explore innovative architectures such as heterogeneous computing, optical computing, and quantum artificial intelligence; optimize intelligent computing infrastructure and build an urban computing power network. The plan clearly states the continuous effort on large models, focusing on the research and development of the next generation of large models, overcoming key technologies such as architecture design and training optimization, promoting the coordinated development of chips, large models, and intelligent computing clouds, and building an independent ecosystem. It further promotes the "Model Power Gathering in Shanghai" initiative, accelerates the maturation of embodied intelligence technology, strengthens the autonomous full industrial chain layout of intelligent robots, enhances performance in key areas, and promotes real-world applications in key fields such as industrial manufacturing, logistics assembly, commercial retail, medical care, and housekeeping services. Among them, Jing'an District focuses on developing leading industry characteristic tracks such as ultra-high-definition audio-visual, data intelligence (data corpus and AI applications, blockchain), and beauty and health.

The founder of Russia's largest mining company BitRiver has been transferred from house arrest to detention pending trial for fraud

According to Russian media bits.media, Igor Runets, the founder of Russia's largest mining company BitRiver, has been transferred from house arrest to detention pending trial by the Zamoskvoretsky Court in Moscow due to allegations of fraud amounting to 100 million rubles. He will be held in custody for at least two months. The charges are based on Part 4 of Article 159 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation—"particularly large-scale fraud committed by an organized group."The investigation claims the case involves the supply of mining equipment, causing nearly 100 million rubles in losses to the metallurgical and energy companies under the En+ Group. Investigators requested the detention of Runets on the grounds that he might influence witnesses, and the court approved this request. Representatives of BitRiver and Runets' lawyer have not yet commented on the court's ruling, and the progress of the case will depend on the equipment appraisal and witness testimonies from En+. In February of this year, Russian law enforcement suspected Runets of concealing assets to evade taxes, leading to his arrest and house arrest on charges of tax evasion. BitRiver is facing bankruptcy and ownership risks, with its owner Fox Group having debts of approximately 9.2 million dollars, and assets insufficient to repay the debts, prompting a bankruptcy application.
