first_img Pantera Junior Partner Jay Yu: Computing power may become a commodity asset

Pantera Capital Junior Partner Jay Yu published an article titled "The Rise of Compute Markets," stating that computing power and data center spending have become a trillion-dollar category, but GPU procurement is still mainly done through group chats, over-the-counter brokers, and bilateral agreements. He noted that the financialization of computing power is still in its early stages, constrained by SKU, time, and location, but could become a commodity asset similar to electricity or oil in the next 5 to 10 years. Jay Yu believes that the computing power market may form a "hardware-supplier-cluster" structure similar to the electricity "grid-operator-node," with new cloud vendors being structural shorts on GPUs, while on-demand platforms and application layers are longs.He mentioned that for every $100 spent on inference at the application layer, about $45 flows to the on-demand layer, about $50 flows to the new cloud or GPU layer, and about $5 flows to routing layers like OpenRouter. NVIDIA can be seen as the "central bank" of computing power, having announced support for up to 25% residual value. He also stated that physical delivery has a more enduring moat, and indices, cash-settled exchanges, and financing tools will subsequently emerge, with participants including SF Compute, Vast AI, Runpod, Compute Exchange, and others. The computing power market does not have mandatory price transparency requirements, and basis risk may be greater.

On September 8, 2026, at the Citigroup 2026 Global TMT Conference, AMD stated that AI-related opportunities could reach $2 trillion by 2030. The company expects its data center business to double by 2027, with sales reaching approximately $70 billion, of which AI GPUs will contribute about $40 billion, while the remainder will come from server CPUs. The server CPU market size has been revised up to $220 billion by 2030, previously estimated at $60 billion.AMD has secured procurement commitments of $29 billion to $30 billion, gaining the largest capacity allocation increase among all customers of TSMC, but still faces tight supply of wafers, HBM memory, advanced packaging, and substrates. The MI450 is expected to begin mass production and shipping in the third quarter of 2026, with further ramp-up in the fourth quarter. The gross margin guidance for the third quarter is 56%, as the MI450 ramps up, with a slight decline in gross margin expected in the fourth quarter of 2026 and 2027. Chief Financial Officer Jean Hu stated that the speed, scale, and rise of AI are unprecedented.AMD has announced three major anchor customers: Meta, OpenAI, and Anthropic, all involved in multi-gigawatt deployments and multi-generational collaborations. Helios is ramping up at the rack level. The acquisition of Taalas has been completed, and collaboration with Cerebras is underway to integrate the Helios system with its wafer-scale engine technology. Server CPU revenue is expected to grow over 80% year-on-year in the second half of 2026, with growth exceeding 70% entering 2027. Enterprise server revenue grew over 70% in the second quarter of 2026.

first_img South Korea's budget for each NVIDIA Vera Rubin rack is 27.5 billion won

According to Money Today, the South Korean government has budgeted 27.5 billion Korean won per rack for NVIDIA's next-generation AI chip Vera Rubin, which is higher than previous estimates by foreign media. The Ministry of Science and ICT's budget for GPU server expansion next year is 3.85 trillion Korean won, all allocated for the procurement of 140 Vera Rubin NVL72 server racks. Each NVL72 rack is equipped with 72 Rubin GPUs and 36 Vera CPUs, totaling 10,080 Rubin GPUs. This batch is independent of the 52,000 advanced GPUs announced by the ministry to be acquired by 2028, and the actual supply may be adjusted according to NVIDIA's delivery situation.The budget of 27.5 billion Korean won per rack is significantly higher than foreign media predictions. U.S. investment bank Bernstein's June report estimated the cost of a Vera Rubin NVL72 rack at 9.1 million dollars (approximately 12.3 billion Korean won), while Morgan Stanley estimated it at about 7.8 million dollars (approximately 10.5 billion Korean won). The government stated that the budget has taken into account potential price increases due to GPU shortages and the costs of supporting facilities. This batch of chips will be used for the development of next-generation cutting-edge models such as general artificial intelligence. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Science and ICT Lee Kyung-sook mentioned in June that creating a model on par with Anthropic's large model Mythos would require about 10,000 Vera Rubins, and this scale of 140 units is comparable.
