first_img a16z Weekly Report: Listed GPU rental prices are higher than at the beginning of the year, Netflix's growth rate is about 12%

The venture capital firm a16z released a chart weekly report written by Moses Sternstein on October 23, 2026. The report states that Netflix is still growing, with revenue growth slowing to just below about 12%, the lowest level since 2021 to 2022. The company is producing its own short videos and entering live sports. The report cites BCG data indicating that the upper limit of media consumption in the U.S. is about 26 hours per week, showing a moderate decline since the peak of lockdowns. Moses Sternstein: Competition comes not only from other streaming services but also from short videos, with much of the recent media growth coming from background consumption while driving or working. In terms of computing power, the report cites Ornn Data stating that the rental price of every GPU in the chart series is higher than at the beginning of the year, including the oldest A100, which is about 9% to 143% higher compared to a 6-year straight-line depreciation. Moses Sternstein: Over a longer period, older A100 and H100 GPUs spend more time below that line, but have only shown significant strength since April this year, making comparisons over a longer period not entirely fair. According to OpenRouter, token demand surged sharply in spring, jumped again after a brief plateau at the end of summer, with token consumption for both open-source and closed-source models still following an exponential path, and the share of proprietary models slightly increased last week. The author states that OpenRouter only covers a very small portion, and these indices are not perfect proxies for actual token spending and GPU pricing. In manufacturing, the report states that computer production capacity and utilization rates are rising, with production increases being larger. The increase in communication and semiconductor production mainly comes from expansion, while the price increase for electrical equipment is the largest, but domestic production has slightly declined. The import increase of key categories of AI capital expenditures mentioned above far exceeds the domestic production increase in dollar terms. According to ADP, the increase in average weekly hours for industries related to AI construction is greater than that of other industries, and is generally greater than the net increase in personnel. Job switchers in manufacturing have about a 5 percentage point wage growth premium compared to stayers. Cybersecurity stocks remain strong in IGV this year, but have seen a larger pullback than the market since October. The revenue growth rate of large companies has mostly only increased by a few percentage points, with some experiencing declines, and stock price performance reaching up to about 125%, with Palo Alto Networks' revenue growth largely driven by acquisitions.

first_img Former FTX Chief Operating Officer criticizes Netflix's new series trailer, stating that he felt uncomfortable after watching it

The complete trailer for Netflix's upcoming FTX-themed series "The Altruists" was released this week, and former FTX Chief Operating Officer Constance Wang criticized the trailer in a post on X, stating that watching it made her "physically want to vomit." She mentioned that she had served as COO since before FTX was named and viewed the company as her child. She was also the last person to leave the Bahamas after Sam Bankman-Fried was extradited and lost all her assets in FTX, thus she has no intention of defending those responsible for all of this.Wang pointed out that the media is eager to tell the story of FTX's collapse due to the team's partying in the Bahamas, but her workplace was completely different. The core team of the company had fewer than 200 people at its peak, while other exchanges of similar size had thousands of employees, many of whom worked 16 to 18 hours a day for over three years with almost no time to sleep. She also questioned the portrayal of Caroline Ellison in the trailer, stating that she had worked with Caroline and had never seen her as aggressive as depicted in the trailer; she described her as quiet and gentle, often lost in her own thoughts. Most of the team only learned about Caroline's relationship with Sam through reports after the bankruptcy."The Altruists" consists of eight episodes and will premiere on Netflix on November 19, featuring Anthony Boyle as Sam Bankman-Fried and Julia Garner as Caroline Ellison. FTX collapsed in November 2022 due to a liquidity crisis, exposing its close financial ties with Alameda Research and issues of customer fund misappropriation. Bankman-Fried was convicted of seven counts of fraud and conspiracy in November 2023 and sentenced to 25 years in prison; Ellison pleaded guilty and cooperated with prosecutors, receiving a two-year prison sentence in September 2024.

Netflix released a trailer for an eight-episode series that tells the story of the collapse of the cryptocurrency exchange FTX, focusing on former CEO Sam Bankman-Fried and his colleague and girlfriend, Caroline Ellison, head of FTX's sister company Alameda Research. The series will premiere on November 19, with Anthony Boyle portraying Bankman-Fried and Julia Garner portraying Ellison. The trailer emphasizes that "going all in on math is the optimal strategy," seemingly pointing to FTX's use of user funds for high-risk investments. Ellison, played by Garner, says in the trailer, "Lying isn't bad for a good cause," echoing Ellison's testimony during the 2023 trial, where she stated that Bankman-Fried believed the rules against lying and stealing did not necessarily apply to effective altruism, a philosophy that advocates doing good whenever possible, including through accumulating wealth to donate to charitable causes. After the collapse and bankruptcy of FTX, Bankman-Fried, Ellison, and related individuals were indicted in December 2022. Ellison pleaded guilty and cooperated with prosecutors to testify, while Bankman-Fried chose to stand trial, was convicted on seven counts of fraud, and sentenced to 25 years in prison. As of October, he remains incarcerated in federal prison and has requested a pardon from President Trump and for the Supreme Court to overturn his conviction; Ellison was released in January.
