first_img Samsung Display raises supply targets for Apple's foldable screens and iPad OLED for next year

According to a report by ZDNet Korea, Samsung Display plans to significantly increase its OLED supply for Apple's foldable smartphones and iPads next year. The target for foldable OLEDs will rise from about 8 million units this year to 15 million units next year, while OLEDs for iPads will increase from about 2 million units this year to 9 million units next year, totaling an increase from about 10 million units this year to approximately 24 million units.Apple is a core customer for Samsung Display's small-sized OLEDs. Market research firm UBI Research estimates that the total demand for OLEDs for iPhones this year is about 264.7 million units, with Samsung Display supplying about 144 million units, and a target of approximately 148 million units next year. Apple will launch its first foldable smartphone in the second half of this year, and Samsung Display plans to supply a 7.8-inch foldable OLED. Starting in 2024, iPads will adopt OLEDs in the Pro models, expanding to the mini this year and further to the Air next year. The report cites industry insiders who say that if the foldable screen is priced at around $2,500, shipments this year and next year may be approximately 6 million and 11 million units, respectively; higher prices or supply chain issues could further reduce shipments. Samsung Display's supply targets may be adjusted according to market conditions.

Apple faces a $2.7 billion class action lawsuit: accused of unfair application tracking rules against third-party developers, gaining improper advantages in its own advertising ecosystem

According to a report by Reuters, Apple Inc. is facing a class-action lawsuit in London, with claims amounting to £2 billion (approximately $2.7 billion). The lawsuit was filed today in the London Competition Appeal Tribunal by Ann Pope, a former senior official of the UK's Competition and Markets Authority, representing app developers. The core allegation is that Apple's "App Tracking Transparency" (ATT) feature, launched in 2021, imposes stricter restrictions on third-party developers than on its own services, giving Apple's own advertising ecosystem an unfair competitive advantage. Ann Pope stated that Apple's policies "have caused very significant harm to businesses that rely on Apple as a gatekeeper."Since its launch, the ATT feature has been a focal point of concern for global regulators for several years. Apple's official stance is that the feature is designed to allow users to control whether to permit apps to track their activities across other companies and websites. However, the plaintiffs argue that the actual enforcement of this rule has a double standard—tracking requests from third-party apps require strict pop-up authorization, while Apple's own personalized ads and services can bypass the same restrictions. This lawsuit represents the latest legal challenge Apple faces regarding its ATT policy and is the first large-scale private antitrust lawsuit initiated in the UK market against Apple's app ecosystem rules following scrutiny from regulators in the EU, the US, and several other countries.

first_img Apple M6 uses TSMC 2 nanometers, advanced packaging demand drives the Taiwan supply chain

Apple's first 2-nanometer M6 chip officially debuts, equipped with a 12-core CPU, 12-core GPU, and dual 16-core neural network engines, with unified memory bandwidth reaching up to 170GB per second, initially featured in the new Mac mini. This chip is manufactured by TSMC using a 2-nanometer process and is the first to adopt gate-all-around (GAA) nanosheet transistors, making it the world's first consumer-grade 2-nanometer chip. The supply chain is focused on the subsequent high-end M series packaging architecture. Based on the Fusion Architecture of the previous generation M5 Pro, M5 Max, and the four-die design of M5 Ultra, Apple chips have transitioned from a single large die to a modular design. Future M6 Pro, Max, or Ultra are expected to enhance advanced packaging requirements such as SoIC-MH and WMCM, increasing interconnect density with SoIC-MH and integrating logic, LPDDR memory, and high-speed I/O with WMCM.TSMC is actively preparing for expansion, with Zhunan AP6 as the main mass production base for SoIC, Longtan AP3 upgrading to WMCM, and Chiayi AP7 taking on related capacity. Analysts estimate that WMCM's monthly production capacity will reach about 60,000 units by the end of 2026 and over 120,000 units in 2027. Equipment manufacturers such as Hongshuo, Junhua, Yinneng, and material manufacturers Changxing, Xinying Materials, and Yongguang are expected to benefit.

first_img Changxin and Yangtze Memory Technology validate quality with Apple and resell to North American cloud services

According to DIGITIMES, Changxin Memory and Yangtze Memory continue to expand, and recently Apple is actively seeking to introduce the two Chinese memory supply chains, drawing attention to their entry into Apple's supply system. Industry insiders reveal that the two manufacturers are actually using Apple to prove that the quality of Chinese DRAM and NAND Flash has reached international standards, while secretly expanding their cloud and enterprise market share through third-party assembly for export to North American neocloud operators.Changxin Memory's parent company, Changxin Technology, has completed fundraising of 29.5 billion yuan, while Yangtze Memory plans to raise about 33 billion yuan through an IPO for production line upgrades and R&D. Yangtze Memory has turned profitable in 2024, with a net profit attributable to the parent company reaching 33.379 billion yuan in the first quarter of 2026; its third-phase new factory will begin production ahead of schedule in the fourth quarter of 2026, with a total monthly production capacity of 100,000 wafers, of which about 20% will be trial-produced LPDDR, becoming its first DRAM base. The supply chain indicates that the two companies are expected to increase the self-sufficiency rate of domestic memory in China to over 50% by the end of 2027 to 2028.Yangtze Memory sells NAND to third-party module manufacturers and assembles them into enterprise-level SSDs to avoid location sensitivity; Changxin Memory has already obtained certifications from small and medium-sized cloud operators in the U.S., Canada, and other regions. U.S. private enterprises can, in principle, procure from the two companies, with the entity list primarily restricting their access to U.S. technology, but not completely prohibiting private procurement. Cloud operators also reduce compliance risks through methods such as renting computing power or holding assets through third parties. The industry believes that Apple's influence on supply and demand in the industry is declining, and the two companies have no intention of supplying Apple in large quantities or engaging in price competition, making it difficult to meet Apple's demand in the Chinese market in the short term.
