hot_img The Korea Exchange examines the technical feasibility of temporarily banning short selling and reducing price limits

According to the Korea Herald, the Korea Exchange conducted an internal review on July 29 regarding the technical feasibility and system requirements for a temporary ban on short selling and narrowing the price limit (currently at 30%) to address the recent severe fluctuations in the stock market. Sources familiar with the matter stated that "only technical feasibility was confirmed," and it was not a prerequisite for implementation, but rather a screening process during the review of available emergency measures.Recently, the South Korean stock market has continued to plummet, causing increasing damage to individual investors. During a meeting of the National Assembly's Administrative Committee, several lawmakers urged authorities to consider a temporary ban on short selling and to restart the Securities Market Stabilization Fund. A national petition to suspend short selling garnered over 10,000 signatures within two days of being made public. However, the ban on short selling conflicts with South Korea's goal of being included in the MSCI developed market index; a previous 17-month short selling ban from November 2023 to March 2025 had led to MSCI downgrading South Korea's market accessibility rating. The exchange's officials stated that they have not received any related requests from the government and have not formally discussed a short selling ban.

Thailand's SEC accuses Bitkub executives of concealing a $50 million hacking loss and has filed a criminal complaint

The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) of Thailand has filed a criminal complaint against the cryptocurrency exchange Bitkub Online and two former directors, Sakolkorn Sakavee and Thaweesap Rawan, accusing them of submitting false financial reports between May and October 2021. The case has been handed over to the Economic Crime Suppression Division (ECD) of Thailand for investigation, and the prosecution will decide whether to formally charge them. The SEC stated that Bitkub suffered a cyber attack in May 2021, resulting in the theft of 16 types of digital assets, with losses exceeding $50 million. Regulatory investigations revealed that Bitkub did not reflect the relevant losses in its daily net capital report Form DA 1 from May 10 to October 30, 2021. The SEC alleged that the relevant executives made false statements in the company's official documents, leading regulators to believe that customer assets were intact and that the company had not suffered financial losses. Bitkub subsequently completed the acquisition of alternative assets in late October 2021, but the SEC believes that the reports during this period constituted false statements. In a statement on July 23, Bitkub asserted that existing customer holdings are secure and accounts are complete. Bitkub stated that its co-founders purchased alternative assets in the same quantity and currency to cover the losses and claimed that the cyber theft incident was reported to law enforcement on May 10, 2021.

1inch launches the shared liquidity protocol Aqua, enabling a single fund to support multiple DeFi liquidity positions

According to official news, the decentralized exchange aggregator 1inch has officially launched the shared liquidity protocol Aqua for all users. Aqua allows users to support multiple liquidity positions simultaneously with just a token balance, without the need to deposit assets into a liquidity pool. The assets remain in the user's wallet, and only when a transaction is actually executed does the protocol call the corresponding tokens from the wallet through a single atomic transaction to complete the settlement, returning the received tokens and fees to the wallet.1inch stated that this new model, known as "shared liquidity," is expected to address current issues in DeFi liquidity, such as long-term idle liquidity, low capital utilization, and asset custody risks. The protocol was opened to developers last November and is now officially launched for all users, supporting 13 EVM-compatible chains including Ethereum, Arbitrum, Base, Robinhood Chain, and BNB Chain.1inch indicated that there are several structural issues with current DeFi liquidity. Although many protocols have a high total value locked (TVL), a large amount of liquidity remains in inactive price ranges for extended periods, failing to earn trading fee revenue while also bearing market volatility risks. Additionally, liquidity providers (LPs) typically need to split limited funds across different protocols, trading pairs, and price ranges, leading to decreased capital utilization. Furthermore, traditional models require users to deposit assets into liquidity pools, which not only loses other uses of the assets but also means relinquishing asset custody rights and facing risks such as JIT (Just-In-Time) liquidity bots seizing fees. Aqua enhances capital efficiency by registering wallet balances as a shared liquidity source, allowing the same asset to support multiple liquidity positions without transferring asset ownership; when the wallet balance is insufficient to cover a transaction, the protocol will not execute that transaction, thus keeping the user's actual risk always limited by the wallet holdings.

The Bitcoin BIP-110 mandatory signaling window will open in less than two weeks, with a current support rate of about 2.64%

The Bitcoin BIP-110 mandatory signaling window will open at block 961632, expected around August 9, 2026. As of the on-chain height of 959842, there are about 1790 blocks remaining until that block, and the support rate for BIP-110 signaling is approximately 2.64%.BIP-110's formal name is Reduced Data Temporary Softfork, which proposes to limit the size of certain data fields in Bitcoin transactions, mainly targeting Ordinals type inscriptions, large OP_RETURN payloads, and similar high data volume uses. If activated, the restrictions will take effect at block 965664 and will automatically expire after 52416 blocks, approximately one year later.Current signaling support mainly comes from Ocean, independent miners, and small operators, while major mining pools such as Foundry, Antpool, ViaBTC, and F2pool have not yet shifted to support it. Foundry has requested clients to vote based on average hash power; only if "support" votes exceed 51% of the participating weighted hash power will the pool switch all blocks to support signaling. If the current signaling level persists until block 961632, nodes executing BIP-110 will reject blocks that do not emit version bit 4 signals and will follow the minority of blocks that do emit signals. Non-upgraded nodes will continue to accept both signaling and non-signaling blocks and will follow the chain with the highest accumulated proof of work.

The Thai SEC has filed a criminal lawsuit against Bitkub, accusing it of concealing a hacker attack of approximately 50 million dollars in 2021

According to Cointelegraph, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) of Thailand has filed a criminal complaint against the digital asset exchange Bitkub Online and two former directors, Sakolkorn Sakavee and Thaweesap Rawan, accusing them of involvement in false reports related to a cyber attack in 2021.The SEC stated that a cyber attack in May 2021 resulted in the theft of 16 digital assets from Bitkub, valued at approximately 1.7 billion Thai Baht, or about 50 million USD. The regulatory agency claimed that Bitkub subsequently replenished the stolen assets before October 31, 2021, but the daily net capital flow reports submitted from May 10 to October 30, 2021, did not accurately reflect the reduction in assets.Bitkub stated on the X platform that the case stems from disclosure decisions made after the cyber attack in May 2021 and is not an act of fraud. The exchange claimed that the delay in disclosing the compromised wallet was to avoid a bank run, and the co-founder subsequently purchased an equivalent amount of digital assets to cover the stolen funds, with no financial losses incurred by the company or its clients. Bitkub was established in 2018 and is one of Thailand's major cryptocurrency exchanges. Bitkub's parent company is considering a potential initial public offering, including the possibility of listing in Hong Kong.

The EU expands cryptocurrency restrictions on Belarus, prohibiting its citizens from controlling all cryptocurrency service providers under MiCA regulation

The European Union has further tightened restrictions on cryptocurrency assets related to Belarus, prohibiting Belarusian citizens and residents from owning, controlling, or managing cryptocurrency service providers regulated by the Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation (MiCA). According to the Council Decision (CFSP) 2026/1847 passed by the EU Council, this measure is an extension of the EU's sanctions framework against Belarus's involvement in the Russia-Ukraine conflict. The new regulations will officially take effect on July 24, with the expanded restrictions on the cryptocurrency industry set to be implemented from August 25. According to MiCA, the affected services include operating cryptocurrency trading platforms, cryptocurrency exchanges, executing and transmitting customer orders, cryptocurrency issuance services, asset transfer services, investment consulting, and portfolio management. This restriction comes as the MiCA transition period ends on July 1. The EU had previously required unauthorized cryptocurrency businesses to cease related operations, or face regulatory enforcement. The EU stated that this expansion of restrictions is part of its efforts to combat the use of cryptocurrency platforms to evade sanctions against Russia. Previously, in the 21st round of sanctions against Russia, the EU had expanded the trading ban to 14 cryptocurrency-related service platforms outside the EU and established a mechanism to prohibit future transactions with any foreign cryptocurrency service providers identified as helping Russia evade sanctions. Market participants noted that as the MiCA regulatory framework is fully implemented, the EU is further strengthening its regulatory control over the cryptocurrency industry through licensing systems and sanction mechanisms.
