first_img Blockstream executive Peter Bain: Institutional clients are optimistic about the Bitcoin bull market

Blockstream Chief Marketing Officer Peter Bain stated in a recent interview that Bitcoin has maintained the $81,000 mark amid stock market sell-offs, rising 10-year U.S. Treasury yields, and turmoil in Europe, which he described as "a very, very strong signal." He made this statement during a conversation with Grace Remington and Sean Hagan.Bain emphasized that technological development precedes price and discussed topics such as adoption, stablecoins, and tokenized stocks. He introduced Blockstream's new center established in Lugano and a new consulting department aimed at institutional clients, while explaining why treasury companies are mainly concentrated in the United States and why Switzerland will become the next market—Switzerland's clear regulatory framework and strong banking foundation make it an ideal launch market.Regarding quantum computing, Bain believes that the related threats will take decades to materialize, and that Bitcoin's real weaknesses lie elsewhere. He referenced the PHP vulnerability incident, stating that the industry needs to rethink the way software is released, and introduced Blockstream's research on quantum-resistant signature solutions, how consensus can be reached for quantum upgrades, and the Bitcoin Security Alliance. Additionally, he provided the first update on the Liquid Network event progress: the exchange service has been restored, the network is back online, and users can transfer Bitcoin back to the main chain. Looking ahead to 2027, Bain stated that institutional clients believe Bitcoin "is expected to usher in a major bull market."

first_img PHP Foundation Executive Director: Only 1 full-time employee, citing insufficient funds

Reuters reported on October 23 that Elizabeth Barron, the Executive Director of the non-profit organization PHP Foundation, which supports the open-source language PHP, stated in an email interview on Friday that the foundation is severely underfunded. She mentioned that recent events indicate a high reliance on PHP by businesses and governments, and given this reliance, PHP's funding is clearly insufficient.Barron noted that the foundation currently has only one full-time employee, which is herself, along with 14 part-time contractors, with funding coming from donations and grants. The increase in coding related to artificial intelligence has roughly doubled the foundation's workload. The number of code change proposals received by the PHP project is nearly double that of a year ago, but the number of contributors has not doubled. She stated that reviewing code contributions and bug reports requires a significant amount of manual input and expertise.Reuters reported that two serious vulnerabilities in PHP were discovered this week, prompting urgent patches for websites worldwide, highlighting the critical importance of this nearly thirty-year-old open-source language to the internet. The article stated that PHP may support approximately 70% of websites globally, and there is currently no evidence that these vulnerabilities were exploited before their disclosure. The report was filed by journalist Toby Sterling from Amsterdam.

Gate Executive Director Edwin Cheung: Cross-border payments are expected to become an important driving force for the next stage of growth in the cryptocurrency industry

According to a recent report by AlphaWire, Edwin Cheung, Executive Director of Gate, stated in an interview during TOKEN2049 Singapore that the payment business will become an important growth direction for Gate, serving individuals and corporate users with daily fund transfer needs. On October 7, Gate officially launched Gate Money, allowing users to open a global electronic bank account in their own name through the Gate App, and as services gradually open, it will accept payments in over 60 local currencies, connecting digital assets with everyday financial scenarios. Edwin Cheung pointed out that stablecoins can reduce the number of intermediary banks in cross-border transfers and enhance the transparency of fund flows. In the future, it will coexist long-term with traditional bank transfers, instant payments, and QR code payments, and will play a greater role in cross-currency payments as services develop in Europe, Asia, and the Middle East. Gate Money integrates functions of fiat currency, digital assets, stocks, ETFs, and gold, providing integrated financial services.Regarding institutional business and security, he mentioned that institutional investors remain highly concerned about liquidity and counterparty risk. Gate offers an OES over-the-counter settlement solution, allowing institutional clients' assets to be retained in third-party custodians while still utilizing Gate's liquidity and trading services, and enhancing transparency with reserve proof. He emphasized that user trust is crucial, and Gate's compliance qualifications, risk control system, and cooperation with various market regulatory agencies are key to the sustainable development of the business.

first_img Palantir executives say AI researchers have started smoking, betting that AI will cure cancer

Palantir's Chief Technology Officer Shyam Sankar stated in an interview on CBS News' "Face the Nation" that many AI researchers have started smoking to demonstrate their confidence in AI to other researchers. He quoted the attitude of such researchers saying, "I truly believe in AI; it will cure cancer, so I’m showing you that I’m all in." Sankar did not name any specific researcher nor cite survey data; this statement was made in passing when host Margaret Brennan pressed him on why he was so focused on the topic. In the interview, Sankar referred to effective altruism as a "millennial-style doomsday cult" and mentioned FTX founder Sam Bankman-Fried as the most well-known representative of the movement. He also cited Pascal's idea that everyone has a "God-shaped hole" in their heart, claiming that some researchers are trying to fill this hole with a machine god called AGI.Medical data contrasts with this claim. The U.S. CDC states that smoking causes about one-third of cancer deaths in the U.S., and cigarette smoke contains at least 69 known carcinogenic chemicals, with smokers being about 25 times more likely to develop lung cancer than non-smokers. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei stated in August that the promise of AI curing cancer is "more of a cliché than inspiring," and that only a true cure for cancer can win public trust. CBS polling shows that 50% of Americans believe the problems created by AI outweigh the problems it solves, and 45% want the government to limit the use and development of AI.
