Coinbase accelerates the promotion of Bitcoin anti-quantum measures: multiple parties discuss future asset migration plans

Coinbase announced that it has collaborated with Stanford University cryptography professor Dan Boneh and Localhost Research to hold a closed-door "Post-Quantum Bitcoin Workshop" at Stanford University, gathering Bitcoin developers, cryptography experts, researchers, institutional custodians, and hardware wallet specialists to discuss the technologies and migration plans for Bitcoin to address future quantum computing threats.The workshop focused on assessing the progress of quantum computing, post-quantum cryptography, and various post-quantum signature schemes applicable to Bitcoin, as well as discussing Ethereum's anti-quantum planning, the practical requirements faced by institutional custody businesses, and how to introduce post-quantum security mechanisms for Bitcoin through new output types. Participants believed that rather than predicting when quantum computing will pose a real threat to existing cryptographic systems, it is more important to establish well-tested response plans in advance.Quantum computing does not currently pose an urgent crisis, but the earlier research and coordination begin, the better we can avoid hasty network upgrades and asset migrations under pressure in the future. However, there is currently no consensus on a single post-quantum solution. Different solutions involve trade-offs in terms of security, transaction data size, hardware performance, key management, and the difficulty of user migration. Participants felt that Bitcoin's anti-quantum measures cannot rely solely on protocol layer upgrades, but must also consider how individual users, institutional custodians, wallets, and hardware devices generate, store, back up, and migrate keys and assets.

Ayo Akinyele, Senior Director of Engineering at Ripple, stated that the company is developing a four-phase quantum-resistant migration plan for the XRP Ledger, aiming to complete the transition before quantum computers become a real threat. The plan includes assessing the network's exposure, testing quantum-resistant cryptographic solutions, running existing security systems in parallel with quantum-resistant alternatives, and preparing emergency response pathways for scenarios where quantum computing advances exceed expectations.Akinyele emphasized that migration is not just about replacing a cryptographic algorithm, but requires more flexible infrastructure, stronger key management, and clearer upgrade paths. The XRP Ledger has supported changing the keys that control accounts without altering the accounts themselves, a feature that is expected to reduce the difficulty of future migrations, but independent validators on the network still need to coordinate any broader rule changes.Meanwhile, Anthropic's model last month reduced the workload required to break leading post-quantum signature candidates by 67 million times, and Bitcoin and Ethereum developers also released their respective migration plans this week. Akinyele pointed out that AI and quantum computing are different technologies, but they are driving financial infrastructure to evolve in the same direction, as AI agents begin to trade and pay autonomously, raising new requirements for payment infrastructure that is always online and natively internet-based.

Starknet completes quantum-resistant signature transfer testing, exploring wallet upgrade paths that do not require migration

Starknet announced that it has completed the quantum-resistant signature transfer test, where a wallet account using a quantum-resistant signature mechanism completed a real transfer on the Starknet mainnet, with a transaction fee of about 6 cents, and can be queried through the block explorer. This account is currently an experimental, unaudited version, mainly used for research testing. StarkWare stated that this transfer benefits from the design of the Starknet account model.Unlike most blockchains that fix the signature algorithm at the protocol layer, each account on Starknet is a smart contract that can autonomously define the accepted signature schemes, allowing users to upgrade their wallets from traditional elliptic curve signatures to quantum-resistant signatures without hard forks, asset migrations, or changing addresses. StarkWare pointed out that most blockchains face quantum computing risks because wallet signatures and underlying verification systems rely on elliptic curve cryptography. Once large-scale quantum computers appear, running Shor's algorithm could potentially break the related encryption systems. Currently, the Starknet ecosystem supports a quantum-resistant signature scheme based on Falcon-512, which is part of the NIST post-quantum cryptography standardization process, with relevant implementations promoted by ecosystem teams and organizations such as OpenZeppelin.

According to Daum, the South Korean stock market has recently experienced increased volatility, with investors' risk appetite significantly cooling, and funds are flowing back from the stock market to safer assets such as banks. Japan's largest security token platform Progmat has completed its migration to Avalanche, officially bringing over $2.7 billion in assets on-chain

Japan's largest securities token issuance and management platform, Progmat, has completed its migration to the Avalanche blockchain, transferring all managed tokenized assets worth over 452 billion yen (approximately 2.7 billion USD) from a Corda 5-based permissioned chain to a dedicated Avalanche Layer 1. This migration was announced in February this year and was completed as scheduled, without affecting the normal operations of financial institutions.Progmat stated that the new architecture no longer relies on a single blockchain and can support future multi-chain expansion. All smart contracts have been migrated to the EVM environment, and while maintaining the original functionality, the speed of asset rights transfer processing has increased by 3 to 5 times, with the final confirmation time for transactions reduced to under 2 seconds. Progmat was initially incubated by Japan's largest bank, Mitsubishi UFJ Trust and Banking Corporation (MUFG), and became an independent operation in 2023. The Hyper Foundation grants approximately 10 million USD to support the USDH exit migration, covering HIP-1, 3, and HyperEVM ecological projects

The Hyper Foundation announced that it will provide approximately $10 million in grants to developers affected by the USDH exit, to cover migration costs and support an orderly transition of the ecosystem. This round of funding will be allocated to affected HIP-1 spot deployers, HIP-3 perpetual contract deployers, HyperEVM protocol, USDH:USDC cross-chain bridge, and other ecosystem participants.Among them, migration grants are aimed at teams migrating USDH-related markets or deployments to USDC; while exit grants are for projects that choose to terminate USDH-related businesses, with amounts lower than equivalent migration plans, to encourage a smooth conclusion of the ecosystem. HIP-1 and HIP-3 grants are based on auction deployment cost estimates, while HyperEVM grants are assessed based on the scale of USDH TVL affected. All beneficiaries must complete migration or business closure by the end of July.On the user side, USDH holders need to operate according to the guidelines of each protocol and can complete the exchange to USDC through the spot market or HyperEVM path. The official has provided support for asset conversion with no fees or spot trading channels. The Hyper Foundation also stated that the USDH migration is progressing smoothly, thanks to the active cooperation of developers and the community, and expressed gratitude to the relevant builders.

The global real-world asset (RWA) tokenization market has exceeded $43 billion, growing approximately 37% over the past 180 days, indicating that institutional funds are continuously accelerating their migration to blockchain infrastructure.The report points out that this growth has occurred against the backdrop of a relatively weak overall cryptocurrency market, with the expansion of on-chain financial assets primarily driven by traditional financial products being tokenized, covering various asset classes such as funds, private credit, commodities, and stocks. In the current market structure, tokenized funds dominate, accounting for about 80% of the total market capitalization; commodity assets account for 16.6%, and tokenized stocks account for approximately 3.8%.In terms of chain distribution, Ethereum remains the core hosting network, accounting for 57.8%, while networks such as BNB Chain, zkSync Era, XRP Ledger, and Stellar are gradually expanding their shares.
