Data: Bitcoin and Ethereum options with a nominal value of 2.52 billion USD are set to expire today

According to Greeks.live, options delivery data shows that 29,000 BTC options are set to expire, with a Put Call Ratio of 0.6, a maximum pain point of $78,000, and a nominal value of $2.24 billion. 114,000 ETH options are set to expire, with a Put Call Ratio of 1.17, a maximum pain point of $2,450, and a nominal value of $280 million.Analysis indicates that Bitcoin continues to fluctuate around $80,000, having surged to $80,000 over three days in late last month, and has been consolidating for nearly three weeks now. The monthly realized volatility (RV) remains unchanged compared to last week, while the monthly implied volatility (IV) has slightly increased, with a general rise in the volatility risk premium (VRP). From other major options data, 7% of options are set to expire this week, with BTC and ETH open interest slightly declining compared to last week, and overall trading activity has also seen a certain pullback. The cryptocurrency market has experienced a 10-month bear market, with the main altcoins' gains concentrated in a week last month; however, during the pullback period, some concept coins and memes have shown signs of recovery, which is a positive signal. The brief calm in the U.S. stock market has also provided a breathing window for the crypto market, creating a very optimistic market atmosphere. Currently, the monthly out-of-the-money IV is not high, making it worthwhile to consider some directional buys.

first_img Metaplanet's options pool has caused shareholder dissatisfaction, CEO responds to the concerns

The tenth round of executive option pool at Japan's Bitcoin treasury company Metaplanet continues to spark shareholder dissatisfaction. This option pool was originally designed to be 20% of the fully diluted equity and automatically expands as the company issues new shares to increase its Bitcoin holdings. Some shareholders are calling for the cancellation of the newly added 273 million shares and for greater transparency in future decision-making. On August 18, Metaplanet froze the option pool at 319.5 million shares, but critics argue that this actually amplifies the dilution for existing shareholders, as the option pool increased from 46 million shares to 319.5 million shares.Metaplanet CEO Simon Gerovich has committed to re-evaluating the company's governance and compensation policies and clarifying its relationship with shareholder MMXX Ventures, stating that it is merely a non-controlling significant shareholder of MMXX's parent company and does not hold an executive position. On August 31, Metaplanet disclosed that Gerovich had exercised 92,000 shares from the option pool. Matthew Sigel, head of digital asset research at VanEck, suggested freezing further exercise rights of the tenth round option pool, allowing holders to voluntarily waive excess rights, and replacing the tenth round option pool with a five-year incentive plan primarily linked to each share's fully diluted Bitcoin holdings, approved by shareholders. In its announcement on August 18, Metaplanet acknowledged that the decision to expand the option pool "amplified the dilution borne by existing shareholders." As of Wednesday's close in Tokyo, Metaplanet's stock price rose, narrowing the five-day decline to about 16.3%.

first_img $6.4 billion Bitcoin options expire on Friday, which may exacerbate market volatility

According to CoinDesk, approximately 81,700 Bitcoin options contracts (with a nominal value of about $6.4 billion) on Deribit will expire on Friday at 08:00 UTC. The number of call options exceeds that of put options, with a put/call ratio of 0.83, and the maximum pain point is at $68,000. The $80,000 strike price holds $157 million in nominal value of call options, while the $75,000 strike price has the largest open interest in call options, reaching $236 million.Shaun Fernando, Chief Risk Officer of Deribit, stated that nearly 20% of Deribit's Bitcoin open contracts are about to expire, combined with factors such as severe market volatility, the volatility term structure shifting from backwardation to contango, a relative increase of 30% in DVOL, and a shift from negative to positive skew in call-put options, this will be a "noteworthy expiration date." Bitcoin surged from about $62,000 to $80,000 within a week, marking the second-largest weekly gain in years, with a large number of call options with strike prices below $80,000 entering in-the-money status.Fernando pointed out that over $500 million in nominal value is within a 5% volatility range of the current price, which may trigger more intense gamma hedging before expiration, leading to a "pinning" effect around key strike prices or accelerating a breakout beyond these levels. Dynamic hedging conducted by market makers to manage exposure may cause Bitcoin prices to fluctuate around dominant strike prices like $80,000, and once a decisive breakout occurs at that level, it could trigger a larger market movement.
