HP and Dell are concerned about circuit board supply in 2027, Amazon invests in Jinxing Electronics

The shortage caused by the AI boom has extended from GPUs and memory to circuit boards. When planning their supply chains for 2027, HP and Dell found that even previously inconspicuous printed circuit boards could face shortages. In September this year, Amazon invested approximately 1.59 billion New Taiwan Dollars in Taiwanese circuit board manufacturer Gold Circuit Electronics, transitioning from customer to shareholder.AI servers require circuit boards with more layers and lower signal loss, and chip packaging substrates are becoming larger, driving up the demand for key materials such as specialty fiberglass cloth and copper-clad laminates. Suppliers prioritize fulfilling more profitable AI orders, squeezing ordinary servers, with some ordinary server circuit board delivery times approaching one year.It is difficult for the production capacity of key materials to keep up with demand in the short term. TrendForce estimates that Japan's Nitto Denko controls about 90% of the global T-glass specialty fiberglass cloth market, with new production capacity not expected to come online until mid-2027 at the earliest. The chairman of Taiwanese substrate manufacturer Unimicron Technology warned on October 20 that some key materials could be short by about 20% by 2027, with delivery times for some chip substrate production equipment extending to as long as 30 months.

Strategy, Strive, and others supported the purchase of 135,979 bitcoins through preferred stock financing, accounting for over 0.5% of the maximum supply

Strategy, Strive, and other Bitcoin treasury companies support the purchase of 135,979 Bitcoins through preferred stock financing, accounting for over 0.5% of the maximum Bitcoin supply; the related preferred stock market size is approximately $12 billion. Perpetual preferred stock has no fixed maturity date, which can alleviate refinancing pressure and attract income-oriented investors who are unwilling to hold Bitcoin directly; however, an increase in issuance size will also raise dividend expenses.Continuous financing for Bitcoin purchases relies on preferred stock trading at or near par value. If the price falls below par, the attractiveness of new issuances may decline, and the company may also turn to buybacks. CoinShares Research Director James Butterfill stated that Strategy's latest weekly report shows the company spent $193 million to repurchase STRC, while simultaneously buying 267 Bitcoins and increasing the preferred stock buyback authorization limit to $3 billion. Buybacks can reduce future dividend costs but may also compete for funds with Bitcoin purchases.Bitwise Research Director Ryan Rasmussen expects that ETFs will remain a larger source of Bitcoin demand in the long term, while perpetual preferred stock covers different groups of income-oriented investors, providing another source of demand support for the market. Butterfill believes that preferred stock may amplify market cycles: when financing conditions are favorable, it supports Bitcoin purchases, but when market sentiment weakens, this support may diminish.

first_img Jensen Huang: The likelihood of a memory supply surplus before 2029 is low

According to the Science and Technology Innovation Board Daily, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang stated during a media interview at the GTC conference in Berlin on Thursday that the likelihood of a memory supply surplus by 2029 is low. He mentioned that one great aspect of memory is that there is always more that can be used, and he noted that HBM will continue to be applied in the coming years.Jensen Huang also stated that Nvidia is the first company in the world to introduce LPDDR memory, used in mobile phones, into data centers, which doubles its energy efficiency compared to any current global solution, thus it will continue to use this type of memory extensively. He mentioned last Thursday that customer demand for AI chip orders continues to exceed the company's supply capacity, with new orders pouring in almost weekly, if not daily. In the past week, storage chip stocks faced sell-offs due to market concerns over supply surplus and weak demand. A well-known media outlet in South Korea published a column last week, citing two experts who predicted that by 2029, there will be a significant increase in semiconductor supply, and the storage chip market may turn into a red ocean. On Thursday, the Nasdaq Composite Index closed down 2.6%, at 26008.86 points; SanDisk fell 8.51%, SK Hynix fell 8.07%, Seagate Technology fell 7.86%, Western Digital fell 6.43%, and Micron Technology fell 6.23%.

first_img Samsung Electro-Mechanics signed a supply contract for packaging substrates worth 360.5 billion Korean won

According to a report by THE ELEC, Samsung Electro-Mechanics announced on October 19 that it has signed a supply contract for packaging substrates for memory semiconductors with a large global company, amounting to 360.5 billion Korean won. The contract period is from January 1, 2027, to December 31, which is equivalent to 3.2% of the company's consolidated revenue last year. This is the first time Samsung Electro-Mechanics has disclosed a long-term supply contract for packaging substrates. With this addition, the number of long-term supply contracts disclosed by the company this year has increased to seven, with a total amount of approximately 4.3 trillion Korean won. Previous contracts were mainly focused on components such as silicon capacitors, multilayer ceramic capacitors, and inductors, and this expansion includes the packaging solutions business, which produces products such as FC-BGA substrates and BGA substrates.Last month, Samsung Electro-Mechanics announced plans to invest 42.7 trillion Korean won in the Sejong FC-BGA production facility and 25.1 trillion Korean won in the Vietnam packaging substrate production equipment. The company also stated that as part of a large government project, it plans to invest 80 trillion Korean won in the Sejong business site and 150 trillion Korean won in the Busan business site by 2040, and will produce FC-BGA in Busan, Sejong, and Vietnam. A related person from Samsung Electro-Mechanics stated that the growth of the AI and high-performance computing market makes high-performance packaging substrates more important, and the company will strengthen customer supply cooperation and establish a stable supply system.
