Liquid Network releases emergency fix: Elements v23.3.4 fixes Proof verification cache vulnerability

Liquid Network has released the latest update stating that the emergency version Elements v23.3.4 is now online. Functionary nodes have immediately begun upgrading and all Liquid node operators are advised to synchronize updates. This version addresses the previously discovered Proof verification cache vulnerability and strengthens the cache keys used for Range Proof.Regarding network recovery, Blockstream states that it is still formulating a recovery plan, which is expected to proceed in three phases: restoring block production while continuing to suspend Peg operations; replaying verified valid transactions; and restoring Peg operations after the network status is fully restored and funds are confirmed to be returned. Currently, the first two phases are being tested in parallel, and any phase will only advance once safety is confirmed. Liquid Network indicates that Elements v23.3.4 has completed multiple rounds of internal and external reviews, with participants including the Bitcoin Red Team, Alpen Labs, and other teams. At the same time, Liquid Network reminds users to be vigilant against fraudulent upgrade websites exploiting this incident. Information should only be obtained through official Liquid Network and Blockstream channels, and users should never send funds to strangers or disclose private keys or recovery phrases.

The Hong Kong police disclosed the operational model and promotional methods of JPEX, announcing five major elements suspected of fraud

ChainCatcher news, according to the Hong Kong Wen Wei Po report, the Hong Kong SAR government police and the Securities and Futures Commission held a joint press conference yesterday to announce the JPEX case. The police summarized the operation model and promotional methods of the virtual asset trading platform JPEX, stating that five elements constitute the suspected fraud:JPEX has not applied for or held a license from the Securities and Futures Commission, yet claims on its website to be "a licensed and recognized digital asset and virtual currency platform," and has heavily promoted itself through advertisements, media, over-the-counter (OTC) exchanges, and influencers to create popularity and attract investors.Influencers made false and misleading statements online, flaunting wealth to create the appearance of "getting rich by buying coins" to increase persuasion. However, since the Securities and Futures Commission had previously issued warning letters to relevant individuals and physical stores, there is reason to believe that the parties involved were aware of JPEX's illegal practices but still promoted it to customers. After registering as JPEX users, individuals could exchange different cryptocurrencies on the platform or transfer virtual assets to JPEX accounts from foreign platforms for trading. However, investigations revealed that JPEX also issued a virtual currency called JPC, which is different from other mainstream cryptocurrencies: JPC cannot be traded on other platforms and cannot be used for payment purposes. Some victims were persuaded to purchase JPC and use it in a so-called "staking" method similar to fixed deposits, receiving extremely high returns only after the staking period ended. JPEX also required customers to provide the private keys of their cryptocurrencies for safekeeping, effectively allowing JPEX to control users' assets. After being warned by the Securities and Futures Commission, JPEX arbitrarily set a withdrawal limit of $1,000 for users and charged a $999 fee, effectively restricting asset withdrawals.By the early morning of the 18th, JPEX had removed all financial trading services from its website.

Hong Kong media: The Hong Kong police are investigating whether JPEX is involved in criminal elements

ChainCatcher news, according to Hong Kong media am730 reports, the Hong Kong police have confirmed to the media that they have received a notification from the Securities and Futures Commission (SFC), and the Commercial Crime Bureau is following up and investigating whether the case of the cryptocurrency exchange JPEX involves criminal elements. The media also stated that some users have reported online that JPEX has restricted the withdrawal limit to a maximum of 1000 USDT stablecoins, and the withdrawal fee has been changed to 999 USDT, meaning retail investors can only withdraw a maximum of 1 US dollar. There are KOL influencers publicly displaying photos of successfully withdrawn amounts, and according to the photos, the influencer successfully withdrew 1 US dollar. However, JPEX issued an announcement last night adjusting the USDT withdrawal fee. Additionally, according to online writer "Qian Song C," at a cryptocurrency summit in Singapore, JPEX, as one of the platinum sponsors, did not have any staff working today.Furthermore, JPEX had previously advertised extensively in Hong Kong through television, outdoor advertising spaces, and bus stop light boxes, and announced that Zhang Zhilin would serve as the brand ambassador. JPEX is not only promoting in Hong Kong; earlier, Taiwanese singer Chen Lingjiu, who collaborated with MIRROR members, served as a spokesperson; and Lin Zuo, who transitioned from the insurance industry to the cryptocurrency industry, promoted "applying to become a JPEX partner" on social media in July, and later promoted JPEX in a seminar. After the Hong Kong SFC requested influencers to stop promoting the platform, Lin Zuo also stated on social media, "I have not violated any regulatory requirements and respect the SFC's request." Another artist, Zhuang Simin, was also reported to have filmed a YouTube video introducing JPEX in July, claiming to receive returns of up to 16 cents. The video has since been taken down, but Zhuang Simin stated that the video was a promotion for a cryptocurrency exchange that has a partnership with JPEX.ChainCatcher previously reported that the Hong Kong SFC clarified that no entities under the JPEX group have been licensed by the SFC, and they have not applied to the SFC for a license to operate a virtual asset trading platform in Hong Kong.
