first_img Coinbase participates in a joint operation in London to combat West African fraud networks

Cryptocurrency trading platform Coinbase announced its participation in Tech Against Scams and is collaborating with the UK's National Crime Agency, the U.S. Department of Justice Scam Center Strike Force, and international law enforcement partners to launch a joint crackdown week in London from October 6 to 9, sharing intelligence in real-time and coordinating actions against West African criminal scam networks.Coinbase stated that the relevant scam networks operate across platforms, seeking potential victims through social media, establishing trust via instant messaging, and using digital infrastructure and financial services to transfer illicit funds. As law enforcement and the industry intensify their crackdown on Southeast Asian scam hubs, criminal networks are expanding to other regions, including West Africa. This operation is hosted by the UK's National Crime Agency, bringing together technology, telecommunications, and financial companies to target the infrastructure, accounts, and payment systems that support scams.Coinbase Vice President Leah Bressack: The earlier crackdown on Southeast Asian scam hubs this year proved that coordinated actions between the industry and law enforcement are effective; as criminal networks attempt to rebuild in Africa, Coinbase's global intelligence team is tracking funds, freezing assets, and sharing intelligence in real-time. The tactics targeted include fraudulent cryptocurrency investment scams, impersonating law enforcement officials, and using fake video calls to carry out "arrests" to pressure transfers. Coinbase stated it will continue to collaborate with Tech Against Scams and law enforcement partners.

IMF: The market size of tokenized RWA is approximately 65 billion USD, which may become a new channel for leverage accumulation and liquidity risk

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) released the October "Global Financial Stability Report," which for the first time discusses the tokenized market in a dedicated chapter. The report shows that as of the end of July, the public market size of tokenized Real World Assets (RWA), excluding repos and stablecoins, is approximately $65 billion, with credit accounting for about $30.4 billion, money market funds about $17.5 billion, and stocks about $2.3 billion. The average daily trading volume of tokenized repos over 30 days reached $303 billion. The report states that the issuance of tokenized stocks is highly concentrated, with Ondo Finance and Backed Finance (xStocks) together accounting for over 70%. More than 50% of trades occur outside regular trading hours for U.S. stocks, with about 80% of trade sizes being less than one share, volatility being about 1.5 times that of traditional markets, and liquidity being significantly lower. The IMF believes that while the scale of tokenized assets is small, it may bring efficiency improvements in multiple areas, but it could also create new channels for leverage accumulation and liquidity and maturity mismatches, exacerbating technological and infrastructure risks, with current systemic risks remaining limited. The IMF also pointed out that in the absence of interoperable central bank currencies, stablecoins and tokenized deposits may become the main settlement tools in the tokenized capital market, leading to issuer credit risk and concentration risk.

first_img A man in London was sentenced to two and a half years in prison for a SIM card swapping scam involving nearly £200,000

According to the City of London Police report, 25-year-old London man Ajay Shinjin (also known as AJ Marley Cruz) was sentenced to two and a half years in prison by the Inner London Crown Court for his involvement in a SIM swap fraud case. He pleaded guilty on September 28 to two charges of conspiracy to commit fraud by false representation and transferring criminal property. The case involved the theft of cryptocurrency worth nearly £200,000 (approximately $265,000).In early November 2021, British telecom operator BT discovered unauthorized activity in its systems, where customers' phone numbers were transferred to SIM cards controlled by criminals, who intercepted one-time verification codes sent by banks and cryptocurrency platforms. The police identified several suspects based on device data provided by BT, and Shinjin was linked to four of the devices. He profited over £44,000, which he used for a vacation in Dubai, a luxury apartment in Canary Wharf, and a gold-plated dental grill.Details of the case revealed that one victim lost approximately £40,000 in cryptocurrency on November 2, 2021, with about £27,000 flowing into Shinjin's personal crypto account; a second victim had approximately £17,000 entirely transferred to his wallet; he also assisted in stealing about £8,000 from a third victim's Coinbase account and around £130,000 from a fourth victim. Shinjin was first arrested at his residence in 2021 and was re-arrested at Heathrow Airport upon returning from Dubai in October 2023.

Ondo Private Markets launched OpenAI private market notes, supporting 24/7 on-chain trading without waiting for an IPO

Ondo's Ondo Private Markets announced that the OpenAI Private Markets Note is now available for trading on the Ondo Perps spot order book. Ondo Private Markets is dedicated to bringing the economic exposure of private companies on-chain, providing tokenized notes for qualified investors, designed to offer economic exposure linked to the performance of leading private companies. The value of the OpenAI Private Markets Note is calculated based on the realized value per share of the company's common stock, as specified in the note's issuance documents. This launch brings three core advantages. The first is the ability to buy and sell at any time: from the first day of launch, trading is available 24/7 on the Ondo Perps spot order book, without waiting for the company to go public. The second is self-custody and free transferability: users can store the tokens in their own wallets and transfer them freely among qualified holders. The third is mature infrastructure support: Ondo Private Markets is built on the same platform that created Ondo's tokenized stocks and tokenized U.S. Treasury products, with a total locked value (TVL) of $3.9 billion and over 1 million holders. The note does not represent shares or equity in OpenAI, and holders do not enjoy any shareholder rights in OpenAI. Ondo Finance launched an on-chain tokenization product for the private placement market, with the first target being a Pre-IPO company in the AI field

According to PR Newswire, Ondo Finance announced the launch of Ondo Private Markets, providing on-chain access to top private companies for investors through tokenized notes. The first target will focus on a private company in the artificial intelligence sector, expected to begin trading on the secondary market this week.Subsequently, Ondo Private Markets plans to expand to private enterprises in fields such as robotics, cybersecurity, biotechnology, and infrastructure. Ondo stated that the related tokens do not correspond to the company's stocks or shares but provide holders with economic exposure to the performance of the reference company's common stock in qualified liquidity events through tokenized notes. The tokens can be freely transferred on-chain and can be used in conjunction with the DeFi ecosystem. This product is based on Ondo's existing on-chain asset infrastructure, which currently has a total value locked (TVL) of approximately $3.7 billion and over 1 million cumulative holders across the related tokenized stock and U.S. Treasury platforms. Ondo Finance indicated that the majority of large companies in the U.S. are still in private stages, with about 87% of companies generating over $100 million in annual revenue being private. Traditional investors often find it difficult to participate in these companies' early growth opportunities. Ondo Private Markets aims to provide a more flexible trading channel through the blockchain secondary market, allowing qualified investors to adjust their private market exposure around the clock.

first_img KakaoPay Securities partners with Dinari and Ondo to explore stock tokenization in South Korea

Korean KakaoPay's securities and tokenization platform Dinari and Ondo Finance have reached separate collaborations to explore the on-chain integration of Korean listed stocks and distribution to overseas market investors. KakaoPay announced these two independent agreements on Tuesday, covering the acquisition of target Korean stocks, tokenization infrastructure, and potential distribution arrangements outside of Korea. The collaboration with Dinari will rely on its dShares model for a proof of concept, which aims to retain shareholder rights, including dividends and voting. Dinari currently offers 724 tokenized U.S. stocks and ETFs through dShares, and this collaboration explores extending that model to stocks of Korean listed companies. Dinari CEO Gabe Otte stated that the proof of concept has not yet selected specific Korean listed companies and has not set a commercialization timeline; the proposed model will use locally listed stocks in Korea as the underlying assets, rather than tokens that only track their prices. The initial focus of the agreement with Ondo is to establish a framework for the acquisition and custody of Korean listed stocks, preparing for subsequent tokenization. KakaoPay will operate a comprehensive account for foreign investors to hold and manage the underlying stocks, and both parties will also study the issuance and redemption mechanisms for tokens. This collaboration comes as Korea advances its token securities regulatory framework: the Korean National Assembly passed an amendment in January this year, recognizing distributed ledgers as legitimate securities registries; the Financial Services Commission included it in capital market reforms in June; and the framework is set to take effect in February 2027.

first_img Ondo Perps CEO: There are huge opportunities in the U.S. perpetual contract market, but the product structure will be different

During an interview with The Block at the Ondo event held in Seoul, South Korea, Ondo Perps CEO David Wells stated that offering perpetual contracts in the United States is a "huge opportunity," and that it is "reasonable" for Ondo to explore such expansion. He mentioned that everyone is paying attention to the U.S. because there are now more opportunities opening up that were previously impossible. However, he also noted that U.S. perpetual contract products will differ from existing products, with structures that vary from non-U.S. markets.Wells' remarks come as U.S. regulators are testing how perpetual contracts can enter the U.S. market with several companies. In August, Trump stated that the CFTC is "bringing Hyperliquid to the U.S. in a fully compliant and legal manner." Kraken's parent company, Payward, has announced plans to launch Hyperliquid's HIP-3 perpetual market for eligible U.S. customers through the CFTC-regulated Bitnomial Exchange and NinjaTrader Clearing. Coinbase has also applied to launch single-stock perpetual contracts in the U.S. Earlier this month, Ondo Finance submitted a letter to the SEC and CFTC arguing that U.S. stock perpetual contracts fall under the securities futures category as defined by the Commodity Futures Modernization Act of 2000.Wells indicated that while the U.S. version of perpetual contracts and its market structure may be similar, settlement and clearing would need to change to comply with U.S. regulations. He did not confirm any plans to enter the U.S. market, stating that the team has not "gone too far" in exploring the U.S. market.
