first_img Anthropic's prospectus names TSMC, warning that advanced chip production capacity is concentrated in Taiwan

The AI laboratory Anthropic, which developed Claude, named TSMC in its IPO prospectus, warning that the world's most advanced chip manufacturing capacity is highly concentrated in Taiwan. The prospectus states that if TSMC's operations are disrupted, it could severely impact the supply of AI chips and affect Anthropic's business, financial condition, and operational results.According to MoneyDJ citing the prospectus, the global AI industry heavily relies on TSMC's advanced processes. Suppliers such as NVIDIA and AMD, as well as companies that design their own chips like Amazon and Google, all need TSMC to turn their designs into physical chips. The listed risks include earthquakes, typhoons, interruptions in power and water supply, as well as cross-strait geopolitical tensions, military conflicts, blockades, tariffs, and trade restrictions. The prospectus also states that if a significant event occurs in Taiwan, the supply of advanced chips could be severely hindered; due to the time-consuming nature of building and certifying alternative foundries, the impact could last for several years. The expansion of advanced processes outside Taiwan is still in its early stages, making it difficult to effectively reduce concentration risks in the short term. TSMC has been unable to fully meet market demand due to strong demand, resulting in Anthropic not being able to obtain a sufficient supply of chips in a timely manner.

first_img Micron Technology's Taoyuan Union in Taiwan has received authorization for a strike, and the bonus dispute has escalated

According to a report by Reuters, reprinted by Nikkei Asia, the union representing employees at Micron Technology's Taoyuan plant in Taiwan announced on Wednesday that it has obtained authorization for a strike, with the focus of the dispute being the company's bonus plan. The union stated that 1,994 members voted in favor of the strike, accounting for 99% of the voters, while details such as the timing of the strike are still under discussion. Micron has approximately 15,000 employees in Taiwan, with independent unions in Taoyuan and Taichung, and the two unions together represent over 80% of Micron's employees in Taiwan. Micron Taiwan is the company's largest manufacturing base.Taiwan is a key production site for Micron's DRAM and high-bandwidth memory, with related chips being important components for AI servers. Mediation with the Taoyuan union did not reach an agreement in September, and the Taichung union is still in negotiations. In September, Micron announced that it would distribute bonuses for the fiscal year 2026 to over 60,000 employees worldwide, stating that the company had experienced an "extraordinary year," with Taiwanese employees receiving a cash bonus of 1 million New Taiwan Dollars, approximately 31,400 US dollars. The Taoyuan union stated that the plan did not address the request for a permanent profit-sharing mechanism and criticized Micron for announcing the bonuses without first reaching an agreement with the union during the mediation period.

first_img Micron grants the highest bonuses in history, and the Taiwan union states it will continue to push for strikes

Micron announced today that it will distribute 2026 fiscal year bonuses to over 60,000 employees worldwide to acknowledge the company's achievements this year, marking the highest bonuses in Micron's history. Taiwan is a key hub for Micron's global technology leadership, with approximately 15,000 employees and a cumulative investment of over NT$1.6 trillion. In Taiwan, the 2026 fiscal year bonuses include a NT$1 million cash bonus for each employee who joins before August 29, 2025, with subsequent hires receiving bonuses proportionate to their duration of employment; an annual performance bonus that can reach up to 500% of the basic target; and additional stock awards. Production line employees in Taiwan will receive total compensation equivalent to 35 to 68 months of salary. The cash compensation for Micron's employees in Taiwan for the 2026 fiscal year will start at NT$1.7 million; entry-level engineers will have an average cash compensation of NT$2.9 million, with an average total compensation of NT$3.4 million after including stock awards calculated at grant value. The annual performance adjustment stock awards will cover 100%.Regarding Micron's announcement without reaching a consensus with the union, the union stated after collecting member opinions: grassroots members demand institutional reform and equal negotiation, calling for a change in the IPP profit-sharing system to a 15% profit-sharing system, stating that one-time bonuses cannot resolve the issue, and expressing the hope to establish a calculation basis directly linked to the company's actual profits. If there is no response, the union will continue to move towards a strike. The Ministry of Labor stated that it has fully grasped the relevant information and is maintaining close contact with the Taoyuan City Government, the Central Taiwan Science Park Administration, and the Taichung City Government.

first_img The Ministry of Economic Affairs of Taiwan confirmed that Taiwanese companies will increase their investment in the United States by 20 billion USD

The Ministry of Economic Affairs of Taiwan has confirmed that Taiwanese companies will invest an additional 20 billion USD in the United States. Minister of Economic Affairs Wang Mei-hua stated that in response to order demands, in addition to the main production bases in Taiwan, capacity will also be increased in the United States, primarily focusing on semiconductor manufacturers, supply chains, and AI server manufacturers.U.S. Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo previously stated that Taiwan would announce investments of 20 to 30 billion USD in the U.S. next week. The Ministry of Economic Affairs responded that this investment is the 20 billion USD announced by Wang Mei-hua during the opening of the SEMICON TAIWAN 2026 U.S. Pavilion on the 2nd. Wang Mei-hua pointed out that global orders for AI and semiconductors are booming, and the global president of SEMI has raised the forecast for global semiconductor revenue in 2030 from 1 trillion USD to 2 trillion USD.The Ministry of Economic Affairs' review shows that as of May this year, 20 semiconductor and AI server-related companies have announced investments of 35 billion USD in the United States, with an additional 20 billion USD added in the following months. Future cooperation will also extend to industries such as biotechnology and natural gas.

first_img Apple M6 uses TSMC 2 nanometers, advanced packaging demand drives the Taiwan supply chain

Apple's first 2-nanometer M6 chip officially debuts, equipped with a 12-core CPU, 12-core GPU, and dual 16-core neural network engines, with unified memory bandwidth reaching up to 170GB per second, initially featured in the new Mac mini. This chip is manufactured by TSMC using a 2-nanometer process and is the first to adopt gate-all-around (GAA) nanosheet transistors, making it the world's first consumer-grade 2-nanometer chip. The supply chain is focused on the subsequent high-end M series packaging architecture. Based on the Fusion Architecture of the previous generation M5 Pro, M5 Max, and the four-die design of M5 Ultra, Apple chips have transitioned from a single large die to a modular design. Future M6 Pro, Max, or Ultra are expected to enhance advanced packaging requirements such as SoIC-MH and WMCM, increasing interconnect density with SoIC-MH and integrating logic, LPDDR memory, and high-speed I/O with WMCM.TSMC is actively preparing for expansion, with Zhunan AP6 as the main mass production base for SoIC, Longtan AP3 upgrading to WMCM, and Chiayi AP7 taking on related capacity. Analysts estimate that WMCM's monthly production capacity will reach about 60,000 units by the end of 2026 and over 120,000 units in 2027. Equipment manufacturers such as Hongshuo, Junhua, Yinneng, and material manufacturers Changxing, Xinying Materials, and Yongguang are expected to benefit.
